Breaking Ground: Queensland's housing crisis progress report

Breaking Ground is a ‘one year on’ progress report of the 2023 landmark report,
A Blueprint for tackling Queensland’s housing crisis. It was the first of its kind in Australia to outline a comprehensive, evidence-based reform package to tackle the housing crisis at a state level.

This 2024 report aims to document and evaluate recent measures enacted by the Queensland Government and the Australian Government that relate to the earlier recommendations of:

Have a plan
Build more houses
Make renting affordable and more secure
Make homes more affordable.

The report was written by Professor Hal Pawson and the UNSW City Future Research Centre team and was commissioned by QCOSS and the Town of Nowhere Partners.

Nowhere is too big to ignore

More than 300,000 Queenslanders have unmet housing needs. They are either homeless or are on low incomes and paying more than 30% of that in rent.

The Town of Nowhere has a population greater than the city of Cairns.

Everyone should have a safe place to call home, but our current reality means entire families are living out of tents, in their cars, couch surfing, or sleeping rough.

The Town of Nowhere campaign brings together a coalition of community organisations and everyday Queenslanders dedicated to ending our state’s housing crisis.

Hundreds of thousands of Queenslanders don’t have a secure place to live.

But together, we can help the people of Nowhere get on the road to somewhere.
